Fuel Tank Nutrition: Empowering Underserved Communities through Cooking Demonstrations
David Morrison, a current Nutrition and Dietetics student at Metropolitan State University of Denver, is making waves with his award-winning business that provides cooking demonstrations to underserved communities. Originally from the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana, Morrison turned to boxing as a way to stay fit and eventually went pro in 2007.
While pursuing his degree in Exercise Science and Sport Conditioning through MSU Denver’s Individualized Degree Program, Morrison realized the importance of nutrition in maintaining energy levels during intense training sessions. This led him to establish Fuel Tank Nutrition, an organization dedicated to educating youth athletes about the components of a healthy meal.
Morrison recently won the grand prize of $12,000 at the Reimagine Wellness Challenge, allowing him to launch his program that teaches young people how to differentiate between nutrient-dense meals and processed foods. The classes and demonstrations held through Fuel Tank Nutrition have been well-received, with the first round of classes taking place at the Johnson Recreation Center in the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood.
In the future, Morrison plans to expand his program in partnership with Brick City Boxing Academy, offering six-week nutrition and cooking demonstrations for youth, parents, and communities. Additionally, he will be starting the Nutrition master’s program this fall to further his expertise in the field.
Morrison’s ultimate goal is to provide youth athletes with the knowledge they need to sustain their energy levels through training, combining his background in sports conditioning and nutrition to help boxers reach their full potential. With his dedication to improving the wellness of his community, Morrison is certainly making a positive impact through his innovative business.
