Former UNC Wrestling Champion Austin O’Connor Makes MMA Debut

Two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion Austin O’Connor is making a bold move into the world of MMA, as he prepares for his professional debut on June 9 against fellow pro debut Camden Fontenot at Fury FC 91 in Rosenberg, Texas.

O’Connor, who is considered one of the best wrestlers in UNC history, made the decision to transition to MMA after his successful collegiate wrestling career. With two NCAA championships under his belt and a legacy of five All-American honors, O’Connor felt that MMA offered him a new challenge and opportunity to continue pursuing his athletic dreams.

In a recent interview with MMA Junkie Radio, O’Connor explained his decision to pursue MMA, citing his in-between weight class as a factor that hindered his Olympic aspirations. To prepare for his professional debut, O’Connor has been training at Valle Flow Striking Academy in Besenville, Illinois, and American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California. Additionally, he has taken on a role as an assistant wrestling coach for the University of Illinois, showcasing his dedication to both his MMA career and the wrestling community.

As O’Connor gears up for his debut on UFC Fight Pass, fans are eager to see how this talented wrestler will fare in the world of MMA. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting journey for Austin O’Connor as he steps into the cage for the first time as a professional fighter.
