Inmate Boxing Matches Boost Morale in Mississippi Department of Corrections with Jay-Z’s Donation
The Mississippi Department of Corrections is shaking up the traditional prison routine by introducing a new way for inmates to stay active and engaged – boxing matches in a ring donated by none other than Jay-Z.
In an effort to promote rehabilitation and reduce idleness among inmates, the MDOC is forming sports teams at all state-run facilities, including basketball, flag football, and softball. The introduction of boxing matches adds an exciting and competitive element to the mix.
The first boxing match took place at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, where teams faced off against those from the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl. The event was a hit, with inmates receiving pre-match physicals and drug tests to ensure safety and fair play.
According to Mississippi State Penitentiary Superintendent Marc McClure, the boxing matches have had a positive impact on inmate morale and behavior. “This has been beneficial to reducing behavior problems and providing an additional tool to improve both inmate morale and reducing idleness,” McClure said.
The donation of the boxing ring by Jay-Z, facilitated by his attorney Marcy Croft, has been a game-changer for the program. With the support of the Mississippi Athletic Commission Chairman Randy Phillips, inmates receive proper training and safety equipment to participate in the matches.
Overall, the introduction of boxing matches in prison is a unique approach to promoting physical activity, camaraderie, and rehabilitation among inmates. As the program continues to expand, it is expected to have a lasting impact on the well-being and development of those incarcerated. Stay tuned for more updates on this innovative initiative.
